About a week ago, I watched this musical drama with my friend, Damar. I’m not sure whether you’ve watched or even heard about High School Musical before, but if you haven’t, it’s worth a try.
The story was nothing special – what do you expect? It’s a Disney movie after all.
- Bunch of ridiculously beautiful specimen of human creatures; Caucasians, Blacks and Latinos – and apparently no Asians were featured here :: check.
- Distinctly colorful outfits, whether it’s for normal school day, basketball practices, drama class, or even for scholastic decathlon laboratory session :: check.
- Happy ending for everyone, even for the ‘bad’ guys :: check.
- Last but not least, moral of the day the movie delivers to the audience :: check.
Despite all my sarcastic review above, I was surprised to say that I find it very entertaining. I mean, don’t you all agree that we really need to spend sometime enjoying such beautiful utopia, leaving all the real world behind?
That’s exactly how I spent my last vacation to paradise: watching two adorable kids, one is a star player for his basketball team and another is the most beautiful geek in school, struggling their way to be part of none other but their lovely high school musicale.
Apart from the “captivating” storyline, the songs featured here didn’t disappoint me either. If you happen to be fan of bubblegum pop kind of songs with evocative lyrics, you’ll find yourself a good time here. The title of today’s entry was one of the song title: Stick to the status quo.
It was sung by almost ALL students of this adorable school. Funny thing is, they sang it while they’re having their lunch. In the school cafetaria. Pretty much of a musical isn’t it? The lyrics tells about how one should NEVER try something which isn’t their element. It’ll just bring them disaster. Look at the part of the lyrics: If you wanna be cool, just follow the simple rules, don’t mess with the flow, stick to the status quo.
At first, I was thinking that this song was only played to illustrate the turning point of the storyline – just to make the two leads doubt themselves for having dreams to be part of the musical. Coincidentally, I also happened to tell myself about that sometimes ago – even if everyone tells you not to do it, you must follow your heart, no matter what they say. Just right on that moment, it got me thinking that it must be some kind of sign from the Power That Be.
…
I must follow my heart.
To try something new.
To jump over that border.
To be something different.
…
Naah.. Must be another silly temporary daylight illusion! If I really DO have that special undiscovered groundbreaking talent, I would’ve been somewhere else right now. But things aren’t that way unfortunately. So, why don’t I just get back to the flow and bury that insane thought deep. Back to the status quo.
By the way, here’s another parody from Mad TV, how I love them so much, of High School Musical.
and if you wanna spend sometime visiting utopia, here’s one way to do it: Stick To The Status Quo vidclip
